From the Chief's Desk

BECAUSE OF THE CHILDREN... I have been asked many times why we have this phrase printed on our departmental shield, so I would like to explain. The shield that we have adopted was designed by Jim Hansen in 1999. We choose the Maltese Cross because it is an international symbol associated with the fire service. In the center of the shield is the star of life which represents the medical and rescue services that we provide. The Latin phrase Quia Puerorum Puerisque, translated means Because of the Children; and was added because of the firefighter's history being so strongly connected to the Old WorId' s Celtic beliefs. As we designed this shield we wanted something that would relate to our beginning, and to the reason for our very existence. In the late 1950s there was a fire in the Tuxedo mill village that claimed the lives of two young boys. The story has been told that the house caught fire and the boys were trapped. Employees with the mill attempted to free the children as others tried to extinguish the blaze. They were unsuccessful in the attempt and the children were lost. The closest department to answer the call for help was Valley Hill Fire Department and of course they had an extended response time. This caused a group of concerned citizens to begin the process of founding a local fire department. This is why Green River Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department Inc. was incorporated in October of 1958; BECAUSE OF THE CHILDREN.
