These are the fire classes at this time Blue Ridge Community College will allow junior fighters under the age of 18 to participate in.  This was adopted per the standard as set forth by OSFM:

This course must follow the guidelines established by the NC Office of EMS. The curriculum for the EMT educational program shall be the 1994 release of the United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) EMT-Basic Course: National Standard Curriculum and the Supplemental Airways Modules for EMT-Basic; NSC. In this course, the student will learn the basics of emergency medical care in the Prehospital environment. The student will be exposed to 160 hours of didactic and psychomotor skills. This class will prepare the student to operate in the prehospital environment with or without an affiliation to an emergency provider.
Student prerequisites: High school diploma or general education development (GED); or successful completion of an entrance exam assessing basic reading comprehension skills at a minimum at the tenth grade level. Please contact Kay Houston at 694-1655 for registration information.



Emergency Medical Technician - Paramedic

This course must follow the guidelines established by the NC Office of EMS. The curriculum for the EMT-Paramedic educational program shall be the 1998 Release of the United States
Department of Transportation (US DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) EMT-Paramedic Course: National Standard Curriculum.
This class takes the student to an advanced life support level. The student will learn about and use multiple medications and perform multiple invasive techniques from Intubation to surgical cricothyrotomy.

Student prerequisites: successful completion of an EMT-Basic course; high school diploma or general education development (GED); successful completion of an entrance exam assessing basic reading comprehension and English skills at a minimum at the Post-secondary grade level; demonstration of math skills at a minimum high school grade level. Recommended hours: 200 clinical; 300 field internship. Pre- or Co-requisite course EMS 3000 Anatomy and Physiology. Please contact Kay Houston at 694-1655 for registration information.

 Emergency Medical Technician - This course must follow the guidelines established by the NC Office of EMS.  The curriculum for the EMT educational program shall be the 1994 release of the United States Department of Transportation (US DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) EMT-Basic Course: National Standard Curriculum and the Supplemental Airways Modules for EMT-Basic; NSC.  The EMT program must be conducted by an approved Basic or Advanced Educational Institution as defined in the rules of the North Carolina Medical Care Commission.  In this course, the student will learn the basics of emergency medical care in the Prehospital environment. The student will be exposed to 160 hours of didactic and psychomotor skills. They also will be required to attend at least 20 hours of clinical experience. This class will prepare the student to operate in the prehospital environment with or without an affiliation to an emergency provider.
Student prerequisites:  High school diploma or general education development (GED); and successful completion of an entrance exam assessing basic reading comprehension skills at a minimum at the tenth grade level.
